Early activities at the YMCA included: The Strandler Club, Ward Baseball League, Boys Pioneer Club, Bicycle Hikes, Tumbling Classes, Hobby Fairs, and Bowling Leagues. The first bowling alleys in Van Wert were located in the YMCA.
The YMCA has always emphasized strong character and in earlier years, maintained a strong program in “boys work.” Hi-Y clubs were present in the county schools of Van Wert, Paulding, Celina, and Rockford. Two other programs that were strong with the boys included Woodworking and Leather Crafting.
Early adult programs included the Industrial Management Club, Bridge Courses, Golf Courses, and Investment Courses, along with the ever present Wellness and Physical Fitness aspect.
The YMCA of Van Wert County added women to its membership in 1971. The first Family Membership was established in 1975.
The YMCA remains at its original site, though five major additions have been made since the initial construction (Racquetball Courts, Pool, Gyms 2 & 3, Gym 4, Gym 5 and the Wellness Center).
YMCA Mission:
To put Christian principles into practice through
programs that build a healthy spirit, mind, and body
