Van Wert Co-WBL Champions
The
Van Wert wrestling team finished second in this year’s Western
Buckeye League tournament, but ended up with a share of the WBL
wrestling crown after outpointing regular-season champion Celina in
the tourney to earn a share of the league title with the Bulldogs.
Elida won the WBL tournament, also for the second time, earning a
total of 148 points, to 138 points for the Cougars and 119.5 points
for Celina. Three Van Wert wrestlers earned runner-up status in
their weight classes. Those included Gyer Blackmore at 135 pounds,
Matt Noggle at 171 pounds and Adam Custer at 215 pounds. Finishing
third were Kirtis Calvelage (145 pounds), Craig Thomas (152 pounds)
and Christ Overmyer (285 pounds). Finishing fourth were Andy Smith
(119 pounds), and Chris Heath (140 pounds). Because the Cougars
(8-1) finished second to Celina (9-0) in the regular season’s dual
matches, finishing above the Bulldogs in the tournament was good
enough to earn a tie for the league title with Celina.
Team finishes are as follows:
1. Elida 148, 2. Van Wert 138, 3. Celina 119.5, 4. Wapakoneta 114,
5. Bath 112, 6. Defiance 106, 7. Shawnee 104.5, 8. St. Marys 96, 9.
Kenton 55.5, 10. Ottawa-Glandorf 41.5
