After Friday's swims at the state meet in Canton, Heather finished fifth in the preliminary heat of the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:57.21.  She advanced to the finals that evening and completed the day with a time of 1:57.42 where she claimed fourth place in the 200 yard freestyle.
On Saturday, Heather competed in the 100 yard backstroke and earned an eighth place finish in the prelims.  She advanced to the final heat of the backstroke on Saturday evening and claimed sixth place overall with a time of 1:01.35.  Nice finish to a great season Heather!

“The results you achieve will be in direct proportion to the effort you apply.”

 -- Denis Waitly

The above quote holds especially true for VWHS swimmer Heather Easley.  Heather, a senior, is headed to the state meet for her third year in a row.  Heather began swimming for the YMCA Marlin’s swim team when she was about seven years old.  She has continued swimming since that age and has swam for the high school team since freshman year.  Heather is a very dedicated swimmer and she has clearly applied the necessary efforts to advance this far in her swimming career and compete at the state level.
Sophomore year, Heather qualified for the state meet in the 100 yard freestyle and the 200 yard freestyle.  She received a time of 55.00 seconds in the 100 free and was placed 13th.  After swimming the 200 yard freestyle, she received a time of 1:59.13 and was placed 14th overall.  Entering the state meet her junior year, Heather swam the 200 yard freestyle again and the 500 yard freestyle.  After swimming the 200 free she received a time of 1:59.36 and a place of 9th.  The 500 free brought Heather a time of 5:20.50 and finished her in 17th place overall.  This year, Heather enters the state meet competing in the 200 yard freestyle for the third time and the 100 yard backstroke.  She captured an honorable first place finish in the 100 backstroke at the district meet held last week in Bowling Green.  Her final time was 1:00.57.  Heather also claimed second place in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:55.67 at last week’s district meet.
The state meet is held in Canton, Ohio over the course of two days – Friday and Saturday.  Girls DI, girls DII, and boys swim on both days.  This year the girls DI will compete first, followed by the girls DII, and then the boys – in each event.  Prelims are swam Friday morning for the Medley Relay through the 100 fly events.  The top sixteen finishers will advance to the finals that evening.  Saturday is the same, except that the events will pick up with the 100 yard free style and finish the meet with the 400 free relay.  Heather will be swimming the 200 yard freestyle on Friday and the 100 yard backstroke on Saturday.

Just for fun
             A few questions for Heather...

What is your favorite event to swim?

I don't really have a favorite - pretty much anything freestyle or backstroke.

What do you think about before a big race?

I try not to focus too much on anything in particular.  I just try to stay relaxed and calm.

What is your favorite memory from swimming?

I have two - When Rylan and I finally got Coach Clifton into the pool, and when Brian and I ran out the back door from the pool and rolled in the snow during the middle of practice.

Do you have any advice for new swimmers or young athletes?

1. Enjoy every moment of whatever sport you do, it is all over so quickly that it is not worth putting the time and effort into something that you don't have fun doing.
2. Whatever you choose to do, do it because you want to, not because friends or family want you to do it.
3. Don't compare yourself to the best that other people can do, but to the best that you can do.
