March 31st will mark the first game for the Varsity Cougar baseball 2008 season, and April 1st for Junior Varsity.

Mr. Witten, the Varsity coach, has been coaching for 10 years, and his favorite part of coaching has been "The relationships I have developed with my players."

Mr. Thomas will be the JV coach for the second year in the row.  He also served as the freshman coach two years ago, and had coached youth baseball for 13 years.

"We expect to have a good year.  We have lots of experienced players coming back from last year which will help us be very competitive," says Coach Witten.

"This year's team looks to be mostly sophomores," says Thomas.  "Last year, as freshmen, they had a nice season, and I expect us to pick up from there and continue to be successful.  The pitching looks promising, but with an injury, we are currently without an experienced catcher.  This will be something we will need to work through."

"I think our team will compete for the WBL title and have a record around .750," says Brock Thatcher, a returning athlete.

"Think we will have a very competitive team this year," Craig Thomas, a fellow athlete added.  "Starting from having 3 pitchers who can touch 80's, like Austin 'Boogie' Anderson, enabling us to be competitive in the WBL.  Obviously, our goad each year is to win, the league and go deep in the tournament, and this year more than years in the past may be our best chance."

The past seasons of Baseball have left impressions on all who are involved.

"[My favorite part of coaching has been] getting to know the players outside of the classroom setting.  It is also fun to watch their skills and confidence grow as the season progresses," said Coach Thomas.

"My favorite aspect of playing baseball is being able to compete for Van Wert, just like in any other sport.  Baseball in Van Wert hasn't had the history and respect in the league that others have had, and hopefully this season sets a precedent for Van Wert baseball, and we expect to win, just like in any other sport, " commented Craig Thomas.

"My favorite part about playing Cougar Baseball is just having fun hanging out with all the guys, because we're all good friends and have been playing baseball together for a long time," thought Brock Thatcher.
