One of the two AP English courses offered at Van Wert High School is offered during the senior year: Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition.
This is a very demanding course that tests students reading of selected poems/passages and requires students to analyze such novels as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Scarlet Letter, The Great Gatsby, Jane Eyre, Brave New World, Cry, The Beloved Country, and A Doll's House. 
Students write numerous papers on these novels to better comprehend all aspects of the novel.  They read many novels to help broaden their literary knowledge to use on the essays on the AP exam in the spring.
The course parallels that of an English college curriculum, and the students take the Advanced Placement exam at the end of the year.  If a student scores well enough on the exam, they have the opportunity to earn credit hours at their respective college next fall.
